Summary Notes of the First Meeting
of Sub Working Group on the Commissioning of the
Machine Protection System,
Wednesday 22 November 2006
Present: Ralph Assmann, Bernd Dehning, Brennan Goddard, Verena Kain, Mike
Lamont, Laurette Ponce, Stefano Redaelli, Rudiger Schmidt, Jan Uythoven, Jorg Wenninger, Markus Zerlauth
CC: Bruno
Puccio, Benjamin Todd, Roger Bailey
Jan opened the discussion by
showing some slides to set the scene for the
following discussion. The conclusions from the discussions are (to be commented
on in the next meeting):
- The
people present agreed that it is useful to have a (sub-)working
group to define in detail the commissioning of the Machine Protection
System, with and without beam. The proposed list of members seemed to be a good starting point for the
members of this working group (see also second slide).
- The
Individual System Test and the Hardware Commissioning of the MPS
components are already organised by the HC Coordination Group (Roberto
Saban). This MPS Commissioning WG should assure that all the important
elements of the MPS are treated by Roberto in a coherent and standardised
way. It is not the idea of the MPS Commissioning WG to redo this work.
Having no time to write down these procedures is not a valid excuse: all
systems which are part of the MPS should be thoroughly tested and
document. Otherwise it is impossible to guarantee the safety of the MPS.
- One
should start off by identifying the MPS components (including software?),
their role, and their interfaces (next meeting).
- This
should be followed by defining for each identified system its key
functionality (concerning machine safety!) and the details of their
interfaces. Rüdiger proposed to start with the BIS for the next meeting,
presented by Bruno or Ben (confirmed by Bruno after the meeting).
- The
next step will be to define the different test procedures of each system
in detail.
- The
next meeting will also discuss what the working group aims to deliver and
by when.
